Web3 should draw newcomers, not be a ‘money grab from brands’ — Tech CEO

Image
Using Web3 and NFTs to create another slate of millionaires isn’t a good use of the technology, says EndeavourXR CEO Amy Peck. The crypto industry should focus on building blockchain-based solutions everybody can benefit from instead of launching cash grabs for brands , says Amy Peck, CEO of tech-focused consulting firm EndeavourXR. Peck told Cointelegraph at the Lisbon Web Summit that Web3 firms should be build-first oriented and create attractive products to draw newcomers . She added using Web3 and nonfungible tokens (NFTs) as “just another money grab from brands ” to create another slate of multi-millionaires “doesn’t seem like a good look” nor a good use of what is an “elegant technology.” “This is an infinite landscape. The money’s going to be there, right? Let’s build a better bread box. We have the opportunity to do something really interesting and reinvent this economic construct, invite more people to the party, not just create another 1%.” Obtaining an on-chain proof of id...

MultiversX eyes Metaverse scalability as CEO sheds light on spatial computing

The MultiversX CEO discussed the recent interest of Meta and Apple in the metaverse domain and analyzed their respective approaches. The Metaverse concept gained a lot of traction both from the crypto community and venture capital firms during the peak of the bull run. The likes of Meta (Facebook) and Apple joining the metaverse bandwagon only gave more legitimacy to the concept. However, the approach of both multi-billion dollar tech firms has been quite a different approach towards it. On one hand, Meta shifted its whole focus to virtual reality (VR) and recently released new smart glasses in partnership with Rayban while Apple incorporated a spatial computing approach and focused on augmented reality (AR) more and launched its own AR glasses earlier this year. Blockchain-based metaverse-focused platform MultiversX CEO Beniamin Mincu believes the spatial computing approach by Apple is more catered towards the metaverse goal than Meta’s VR quest. In an exclusive interview with Coi...

Web3 is about solving business problems, not token prices: Google Cloud exec

Image
While TradFi is the main source of demand for blockchain tech, digital identity and supply chain are exciting areas too, according to Google Cloud Head of Web3 James Tromans. The crypto industry is far too focused on token prices, rather than figuring out how smart contracts can be used to solve real-world business problems, according to Google Cloud's Web3 lead.  In an interview with Cointelegraph, Google Cloud’s Head of Web3 James Tromans stressed the need to focus more on the business logic in the smart contract rather than the supply and demand dynamics of the token : “What are the business problems that you want to get executed? When you're running a smart contract to execute some business logic to solve your business problem, you're using a token, but the token is not the thing, it’s the business problem that's the thing.” “So I would like us to get away from all this talk about token s and token speculation as if that is Web3 — that is not Web3,” Tromans added...

Slow Food: Kenny Schachter reflects on blockchain art’s past, present and future

Image
NFTs might never boom at quite the same pitch they once did. With his first solo show in 25 years, Kenny Schachter sought to demonstrate how that’s a good thing. With crypto in a state of turbulent flux, a demographic of nonfungible token (NFT) detractors in the fine art world might feel trigger-happy to, at last, declare the industry down for the count.  Meanwhile, artist, critic, dealer, educator and outspoken NFT proponent Kenny Schachter is celebrating the conclusion of Slow Food — his first New York City art exhibition in 25 years — at The NFT Gallery on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, fresh off the heels of headlining NFT Art Day ZRH in Zurich, Switzerland, coinciding with the iconic annual Art Basel art fair, less than 50 miles away. In June 2022, Schachter had just presented the first-ever NFT booth wall at Art Basel with Galerie Nagle Draxler, expanding the acceptance of NFTs just before profile pictures became the face of their demise. Soon after, Schachter was spotted among th...

Bias in AI: What can blockchains do to ensure fairness?

Image
Experts believe that decentralized systems can help secure the integrity and objectivity of data being fed to AI systems, but there still exist very clear limitations. Projects rooted in artificial intelligence (AI) are fast becoming an integral part of the modern technological paradigm, aiding in decision-making processes across various sectors, from finance to healthcare. However, despite the significant progress, AI systems are not without their flaws. One of the most critical issues faced by AI today is that of data biases, which refers to the presence of systemic errors in a given set of information leading to skewed results when training machine learning models.  As AI systems rely heavily on data; the quality of the input data is of utmost importance since any type of skewed information can lead to prejudice within the system. This can further perpetuate discrimination and inequality in society. Therefore, ensuring the integrity and objectivity of data is essential. For exampl...

Bitcoin proponents respond to New York Times' BTC mining report

Image
Bitcoin proponents accused New York Times of overstating emissions by mining companies and omitting the facts about the growing adoption of renewable energy sources for BTC mining. New York Times's latest report on Bitcoin (BTC) mining , titled “The Real-World Costs of the Digital Race for Bitcoin,” has irked many BTC proponent s. A number of Bitcoin proponent s took to Twitter to call out certain aspects of the report calling it "cheery picking data." The NYT article calls Bitcoin mining a “voracious" appetite and claims BTC mining uses as much energy as all residences in New York City. Daniel Batten, a Bitcoin environmental, social, and governance (ESG) analyst, pointed towards two major instances of cherry-picking data and neglecting the increased use of renewable energy in the mining sector. Batten noted that the NYT article overstates actual fossil fuel use for mentioned BTC miners by multi-folds and the mentioned emission levels for these miners are oversta...

Recycle to earn, a new frontier for blockchain technology towards ESG goals

At the European Blockchain Convention, Circularr won the award for blockchain startup of the year. Recycling with blockchain was the pitch. 'Recycle to Earn' was the motto presented by Eric Vogel earlier this month while pitching his startup at the European Blockchain Convention, decades after he started recycling plastics and cans from his grandmother's house to earn extra money for a Game Boy.  Vogel's love for video games and increasing interest in the impact of recycling in the world are behind his inspiration for Circularr, a London-based company seeking to connect recyclers, manufacturers, and brands throughout a decentralized recycling ecosystem. Proper recycling is a growing challenge.According to the Plastic Waste Makers Index, recycling across the world is not expanding fast enough to keep up with plastic waste, resulting in greater chances of being disposed of on oceans, beaches and rivers than going to recycling plants. In 2021, over 139 million metric to...
